Parents of Middle Schoolers:

Instead of Falling Behind Because of Covid-19, What If Your Child Could Be Even More High-School Ready?

…While Also Developing Success Habits That Will Last a Lifetime

“Is my child falling behind?”

That’s the #1 concern for most parents of school-age kids right now. In fact, there’s even a word for it: Covid Slide.

Just $69 per month!

And what we know about Covid Slide so far doesn’t look good…

A recent study found that children could begin fall 2020 with roughly 70% of the learning gains in reading from the prior year, compared to a typical school year. In math, students may show even smaller learning gains from the previous year, returning with less than 50% of learning gains.

In other words, depending on the subject, your child may have lost 30-50% of what they learned last year! And that doesn’t even account for learning losses that might happen during the 2020-21 school year.

After all, we’re not out of the woods yet. And if you’re a parent of a middle schooler, you’re facing some additional challenges right now…

Struggles unique to middle schoolers

While almost all parents of K-12 kids are worried about Covid Slide, parents of middle schoolers have it especially rough.

After all, middle school is a time when emotions can become a rollercoaster. Anxiety and depression tend to spike in the early adolescent years. And right now, kids have a whole lot more than usual to be anxious or depressed about.

Children who struggle with focus, organization, or motivation – more issues that are often aggravated by the middle school passage – have a whole new set of challenges to contend with. School closures, missing friends and family, and general uncertainty right now take a toll on a child’s ability to focus and manage their time.

And parents are bearing the brunt of it.

They (and their children) are deprived of the in-person presence of teachers, school counselors, coaches and after-school programs, reading specialists, and tutors.

Instead parents have to be and do everything for a group of kids who — let’s face it — often aren’t cooperative or open to their parents’ guidance!

On top of that, now parents of middle schoolers are worried about Covid Slide. Especially now that sixth grade is the new ninth, college pressure-wise. This isn’t the time for grades to slip!

Fortunately, there is a way to relieve some of this pressure and help your child thrive. And it starts with understanding the 3 main factors in Covid Slide…

The 3 main factors in Covid Slide

There are three main contributing factors that could cause your child to fall behind right now.

The first factor is disruptions. No surprise there, right? Learning disruptions, like school closures, and the threat of more closures to come, are a major factor in Covid Slide.

And while online classes are helpful, they can also be inconsistent from class to class..Many parents wonder, “Is a 25-minute Zoom class or lessons sent by email really good enough?”

The second factor in Covid Slide is overwhelmed and stressed family units. And much like school disruptions, there’s not much you can do to completely mitigate the added stress we’re all feeling right now.

Maybe you’re working from home, and now you have to tutor and manage your child’s schoolwork at home. Maybe you have to do that for multiple children.

Not to mention the uncertainty, social separation, and scary news stories that take a toll on all of us. And unfortunately, that stress also impairs the parts of the brain associated with learning and memory,2 making it harder for your child to process and retain new information right now. Understandably, that can affect how much they’re able to learn this year.

And finally, the third factor in Covid Slide is the sudden switch to the idea that “your home is your school now.” And along with that, “your parent is your teacher now.”

Asking kids to suddenly view their home as a school and their parents as teachers/administrators — but only during set hours of the day — is a tough ask. Many kids — especially middle schoolers trying to establish their independence — aren’t cooperative with this new situation. And no matter how the parent tries, it ends in frustration for the whole family.

Even kids who are more cooperative can find time management incredibly difficult when learning from home. Especially with the ever-present distractions of social media, video games, Netflix, and more.

Fortunately, there’s a better way forward...

Parents and their children are up against a lot right now. But there’s something you can do to keep
your child on track and ease some of the pressure in your home:

Don’t be the “point person” anymore.

Instead, bring in a third party to help oversee your child’s education this year. Think of this person as a coach.

A coach for swim or baseball makes sure your child is progressing on all fronts, right? Conditioning, specific skills, sportsmanship, etc. They show your child how to manage stress and anxiety. They hold them accountable for showing up to practice and bringing the equipment they need.

And best of all, your child reports to the coach, not to you. (You’ve probably noticed that your child acts much differently with their coach or their teachers than they do with you!)

Basically, the coach makes sure your kid succeeds at something. And while you’re no doubt involved, you can count on the coach to take the lead.

Now imagine if you had a coach like that for academics…

  • The coach would help your child navigate and succeed in ALL of their classes. This isn’t tutoring in one subject, it’s about having the bird’s eye view of how your child is doing, along with giving them the tools for success…
  • The coach would offer consistency. No matter what changes are in store this school year — at-home learning, in-person, a mix of the two — a coach would be a constant in your child’s school year…
  • The coach would help ease your child’s stress and overwhelm. How? Well, a coach would take a whole-child approach to academic success, meaning they could teach your child skills for coping with stress and anxiety… leading to greater success overall…
  • A coach would restore some of the traditional home and parent roles that children are used to. Now your child would be accountable to their coach, not just to you!
  • Finally, along with stress management skills, a coach would help your child learn time management skills and how to focus on school, even with the distractions at home. This is valuable even in a normal school year, as homework and studying for tests has always happened at home.

Can you imagine what this type of support could do for your child?

Imagine if they didn’t fall behind this year, but instead they came out ahead…

Imagine if this was the year your child learned they could succeed, even when life is extraordinarily difficult…

Imagine if this was the year they learned time management skills. Skills that will set them up for success in highschool, college…and for the rest of their lives. (Lots of adults haven’t even mastered this!)

Well, I can tell you what learning those very same success habits did for me…

From Med School to Shark Tank

Hi, I’m Dr. Shaan Patel. And skills like perseverance, stress management, and time management completely changed my life…

I grew up in Las Vegas, in a budget motel that my parents owned. I attended inner-city public schools in the worst school district in the nation. (The dropout rate was 40%.)

And when it came time to take the SAT, well, let’s just say I was clueless about standardized tests. So when my score came back, it was too low to get admitted to any of my dream schools.

Determined to score higher, I locked myself in a library and studied all summer. I spent hundreds of hours studying for the test. I took it again and waited for my results.

Finally, my score was in: I improved my score by 640 points! And not only that, I got a 1600 … a perfect score. That’s something that only 0.02% of high school students achieve.

That perfect score changed my life. I was admitted into prestigious universities, received $250,000 dollars in scholarships, and even got to meet the President.

I went on to get my Bachelor of Arts in biology, an MBA from Yale, and I’m currently completing a medical residency to specialize in dermatology.

But I wasn’t just studying medicine… because after seeing firsthand how good study habits changed my life, I wanted to help others do the same. So I also founded Prep Expert to help students achieve their own dreams.

Not too long after, I appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank and closed a deal with billionaire Mark Cuban for an investment in the company.

Today, over 50,000 Prep Expert students have improved their SAT and ACT scores, gotten into top universities, won over $100 million in college scholarships, and some have even gotten perfect SAT and ACT scores themselves.

I’ve also published books on SAT and ACT prep, entrepreneurship, and self-improvement.

People often ask me if I ever sleep. Well, the answer is yes, I do. The real secret to my success comes down to study skills, time management skills, and productivity strategies.

And when I thought about how I’ve spent my life honing these success skills, I realized that I could really help right now. So many parents and middle school kids need a lifeline. So to build that lifeline, I created…
